Kedushah is the Jewish concept of holiness achieved by sanctifying the physical world through mitzvot and acts of kindness. Rooted in the Hebrew word for “separation,” kedushah involves elevating ordinary activities into spiritual acts that connect the individual to the Divine.<\/span><\/p>

While many view “holiness” as a lofty, distant goal reserved for Biblical figures or the greatest rabbis of ages past, including <\/span>\u05e8\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9 \u05d7\u05d1\"\u05d3<\/span><\/a>, the truth is that kedusha (also spelled kedushah) is within reach for everyone. It is not a state of being found only in the study hall, but a way of living.<\/span><\/p>

To live with kedusha is to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. It\u2019s the process of taking the physical world \u2014 things like food, money, and time \u2014 and using them to connect to G-d, thereby elevating them to a higher, divine purpose. In that sense, kedusha is about how we live our days, every single moment.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What is Kedushah? The Root of Jewish Holiness<\/span><\/h2>

Linguistically, kedusha comes from the Hebrew root k-d-sh. It means “to set apart” or “to sanctify.” To make something kadosh \u2014 a Hebrew word meaning “holy” or “set apart” \u2014 is to distinguish it from the ordinary (chol). We do this every week as we begin the Shabbat meal with the ritual of Kiddush.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0We take a physical cup of wine, recite a blessing over it, and use it to set the Sabbath apart from the workweek.<\/span><\/p>

We also see this in the Shema, which is intrinsically the holiest of all <\/span>Jewish prayers.<\/span><\/a> Recited twice daily in the <\/span>\u05d4\u05de\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05ea \u05d4\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05d9\u05ea<\/span><\/a>, the Shema declares that Hashem is our one true G-d and affirms His absolute sovereignty over our lives. By making this declaration, we are performing the ultimate act of sanctification, acknowledging that there is nothing else besides Him.<\/span><\/p>

This theme of holiness continues communally in the Kedusha prayer during the chazzan\u2019s repetition of the Amidah, or Shemoneh Esrei. In that moment, the congregation joins together to proclaim G-d\u2019s transcendence. It is a truly awesome moment of collective praise. But what does kedushah mean for us on a practical level?<\/span><\/p>

Expressing Kedushah Through Action<\/span><\/h2>

Maimonides \u2014 the preeminent medieval scholar from Spain, commonly known as the Rambam \u2014 addresses this in the Sefer Kedusha of his seminal work, the <\/span>\u05de\u05e9\u05e0\u05d4 \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4<\/span><\/a>. He explains that holiness is not a passive state but a choice achieved through self-sanctification. It is the bridge that connects the mundanities of daily life to a higher spiritual plane.<\/span><\/p>

Let\u2019s take a step back. What does kedusha mean? It is the Jewish concept of holiness achieved by setting apart the physical for a spiritual purpose. It is realized through the performance of mitzvot, prayer, and acts of <\/span>chesed.<\/span><\/a><\/p>

Every act of giving is, naturally, an act of holiness. When we give <\/span>\u05e6\u05d3\u05e7\u05d4<\/span><\/a> that provides life-changing food and welfare programs to support <\/span>food security in Israel, <\/span><\/a>we aren’t just helping or doing good. We are directly expressing kedusha right here in the physical world.<\/span><\/p>

Kedushah in Jewish Texts: Torah, Talmud, and Daily Prayer<\/span><\/h2>

\u05d0 <\/span>core Jewish belief and value<\/span><\/a> is the mandate to strive for holiness. The Torah in Leviticus 19:2 says: “Kedoshim tihyu”\u2014”You shall be holy.” This means that G-d expects our personal conversations, our relationships, and our daily activities to reflect Him. We are instructed to strive for holiness in the thick and thin of our daily lives.<\/span><\/p>

We see this mandate echoed every day in our liturgy within the third blessing of the Amidah, which we also recite three times daily: Blessing G-d as the Ha-Kel Ha-Kadosh (The Holy G-d). This blessing is the foundation of <\/span>Kiddush HaShem <\/span><\/a>(the sanctification of G-d’s name). This highlights that acknowledging G-d\u2019s holiness is the bedrock of our entire spiritual connection.<\/span><\/p>

But as the sages always point out, <\/span>\u05ea\u05e4\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5\u05ea \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05d9\u05d5\u05ea<\/span><\/a> without action are incomplete. Holiness is cultivated through behavior. It\u2019s found in how we treat strangers, how we conduct our business, and how we respond to the cry of the poor.<\/span><\/p>

There\u2019s a misconception that holiness only happens in the synagogue or a Torah study hall. In reality, gemilut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness) and <\/span>\u05e6\u05d3\u05e7\u05d4<\/span><\/a> (righteous giving) are action-oriented ways to bring kedusha into the world because you\u2019re actually living your <\/span>core Jewish values.<\/span><\/a><\/p>

When you perform an act of <\/span>\u05e8\u05d7\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05d1\u05e2\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05ea<\/span><\/a>, you\u2019re taking your physical energy and “setting it apart” for someone else. Tzedakah: Giving as an Act of Kedushah, Not Charity<\/span>\u00a0

We have to understand the meaning of tzedakah as something different from “charity.” The word charity comes from the Latin caritas, meaning “heart.” It implies we give only when we feel like it. Tzedakah, though? That comes from <\/span>\u05e6\u05d3\u05e7<\/span><\/a>, justice. It is a moral obligation to do what is right. When a Jew drops a coin into a tzedakah box or <\/span>Jewish donation box<\/span><\/a>, they are acting as a spiritual steward. This act creates kedusha for both the giver and the recipient.<\/span><\/p>

Gemilut Chasadim: Kindness Without Conditions<\/span><\/h2>

While tzedakah is about money, <\/span>gemilut hasadim<\/span><\/a> (or gemilut chasadim) is about the self. The Talmud says gemilut hasadim is actually greater than tzedakah in three ways: it\u2019s for both the rich and the poor, it\u2019s done with your body or your money, and it\u2019s for both the living and the deceased (Talmud, Sukkah 49b).<\/span><\/p>

Foundational <\/span>\u05de\u05e6\u05d5\u05d5\u05ea<\/span><\/a> like visiting the sick (<\/span>bikur cholim<\/span><\/a>), welcoming guests (hachnasat orchim), and comforting mourners (menachem avel) are all examples of gemilut chasadim. You can’t buy these; they require your time and your presence. This is proof that kedusha is relational. It\u2019s what happens in the space between two people.<\/span><\/p>
