In Judaism, giving is not just an act of kindness—it’s an act of justice. We don’t give because we’re generous. We give because it’s the right thing to do. The Torah introduces this idea early in our story, when G‑d speaks about our forefather Abraham:

“…I love him [Abraham] because he commands his children and household after him that they shall keep the way of G‑d to uphold tzedakah (giving justly) and mishpat (treating others with equity)…”

This is the Torah’s first mention of tzedakah—paired with mishpat—because giving and justice belong together. Tzedakah means treating our resources as responsibilities. When we give, we restore fairness and follow the path of Abraham.

The 12th century sage Maimonides (a.k.a. Rambam) famously said of giving Tzedakah that how often we give is more important than how much we give. Think about it – by giving one large sum, we could think that we did our part and don’t need to do more. But by getting into the habit of giving even a little bit often – a coin in a Pushka every day – we become givers, which opens channels of blessings.

How can I use a Pushka to teach my children about giving?

Every parent wants to raise kind, generous children and the best way to teach compassion is from a young age. A Pushka makes teaching tzedakah natural and hands-on. Start by making it part of your daily routine – perhaps before bedtime or before Shabbos. Let your children drop the coins in themselves, and use that moment to talk about how their contribution helps other families. Be sure to train your children that when they give, they should give with their right hand or with their left hand if they are a lefty. That way, they will not only accustom themselves to give, but they will learn to give with sensitivity, as Judaism teaches to do everything good with the right hand.
