By the time September arrives, most children are thinking about one thing: the first day of school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A new backpack. Fresh notebooks. Sharpened pencils. New teachers. The excitement of seeing friends after a long summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n


For the children in the Chesed Menachem Mendel family, those same milestones carry a different weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Each one begins the school year without a parent who should have been there to zip up a backpack, walk them to class, or wish them success on their first day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some lost a father to illness after a long battle. Others to tragic accidents. Some became the children of heroes who gave their lives protecting the Jewish people. Yet, despite the different circumstances, their stories share one heartbreaking reality they are growing up with an empty chair at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every summer, Colel Chabad’s Chesed Menachem Mendel gathers these children before school begins. Each child receives a beautiful new backpack filled with everything needed for a successful year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, they spend the day surrounded by other children who understand their journey and by volunteers who remind them that they are part of a family that stretches far beyond their own homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One widow shared something with Rabbi Sholom Duchman that captured the heart of what this community truly means. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have six children,” she told him. “To be honest, I can’t always participate in the programs. Sometimes it’s simply too difficult.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Then she smiled. “But every time we receive another invitation from Chesed Menachem Mendel, it feels like a hug.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n


She wasn’t talking about the event itself. “It tells us that someone remembered us. That someone is thinking about us. That Jews around the world still care about our family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n


While school bags are important, and retreats, concerts, family outings, and holiday programs create treasured memories, perhaps the greatest gift of all is something much quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


It is the reassurance that no widow and no orphan has been forgotten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every invitation says, We thought about you<\/em>.
Every phone call says, You matter<\/em>.
Every program says, Your family is still part of ours<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


This is the mission that has guided Colel Chabad for generations. It is not simply to provide financial assistance or organize meaningful events. It is to restore dignity, belonging, and hope to families rebuilding their lives after unimaginable loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


As these sixteen children walk into school this year carrying brand-new backpacks, they carry something else as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They carry the love of thousands of Ambassadors of Chesed across the globe who may never know their names, but have chosen to stand beside them nonetheless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your generosity is measured not only in backpacks, scholarships, retreats, or family programs. It is measured in a widow opening her mailbox, seeing another invitation from Chesed Menachem Mendel, and quietly whispering to herself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“Someone still remembers us.” <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
