Being a widow with young children is difficult under the best of circumstances. Being an impoverished widow and mother is a struggle that every Jewish organization should actively seek to alleviate. Such women never get a day off, nor do they ever get a minute to themselves. A coffee break is an unimaginable luxury. Vacation is entirely out of the question.
While some organizations help widows in some local Jewish communities, they only do so in part. Beyond material donations, these women need a pause from life – a moment in a safe space where they can take a deep breath and be free from the relentless pressures of providing for their families.
The Colel Chabad charity provides just that through its retreats for widows – one of many programs for widows offered by our organization. We provide a safe space for these women to let go of their worries, make new friends, and enjoy parts of life that they have missed out on for so long.

Through experience, we understand that help with food and clothing is not enough for a widows’ charity. Widows and orphaned children encounter enormous social barriers, issues with depression, poor schoolwork and a sense of isolation. Colel Chabad addresses all of these issues on a case by case basis.
Our two-week retreat in the countryside goes beyond what they need to survive: it gives these women the healing and nourishment they need to thrive.
The therapeutic importance of seeing nature’s beauty and its calming effect has been proven to help widows reconnect with themselves, open their hearts, and bring more joy into their lives.
During this special time, our Jewish charity coordinates care for the children of those at the widows’ retreat. Colel Chabad camps offer a safe, fun environment with learning opportunities about the faith’s most important values and traditions.
