Who Was Rabbi Meir Baal Haness?
Imagine losing something precious – not just an item – but your Jewish values and beliefs. This was the reality for countless Jews throughout history, struggling to maintain their traditions in the face of persecution and displacement. But there was hope, and it came from a Jewish sage who lived 1,800 years ago: Rabbi Meir Baal Haness –– Rabbi Meir “The Master of Miracles.”
An Influential Figure
Rabbi Meir lived in a time of great upheaval for the Jewish people. The Bar Kochva revolt, the destruction of the Second Temple, and the subsequent diaspora threatened to fragment Jewish communities and erode their traditions. The October 7th massacre attempted to further fragment the Jewish nation. Colel Chabad, through the Rabbi Meir Baal Haness fund, immediately jumped into the front lines to address these challenges by supporting those who had lost everything. Your contributions have been instrumental in this ongoing work, helping to keep Rabbi Meir’s legacy alive and relevant in the 21st century.
Rabbi Meir Ba’al Haness: The Master of Miracles
Rabbi Meir dedicated his life to helping those in need, performing miracles both grand and small. He once set out to rescue his sister-in-law from Roman captivity. He cleverly bribed her guard with a bag of coins. When the guard feared future consequences, Rabbi Meir taught him to say “G-d of Meir, answer me!” The guard was later sentenced to be hanged. But just as they were hanging him, he uttered the phrase Rabbi Meir taught him and was miraculously released. From then on, the custom spread to call upon the “G-d of Rabbi Meir” in times of danger or need.
A more recent custom is to give tzedakah as a form of charity along with the Rabbi Meir Baal Haness prayer.
Another use is the Jewish prayer for lost items. In many communities, when someone loses something, they have the custom of giving charity and saying “G-d of Meir, answer me” three times.
Continuing Rabbi Meir’s Sacred Mission
Today, we face a different world, but the core challenges remain the same. Poverty, hunger, and spiritual disconnection still plague communities in Israel. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to be the modern-day miracle workers and follow in Rabbi Meir’s footsteps.
