What is a Jewish Calendar Anyway?

What’s a great Jewish charitable organization without a handy Hebrew calendar? It has all the information you need to get you through a year of Jewish holidays, customs and zmanim (prescribed times for certain mitzvot). The Jewish lunisolar calendar is distinct from the civil Gregorian calendar, as it combines both lunar and solar calculations.

Key Features of Our Luach

The Jewish day officially begins at night when the sun sets (sundown).

This originates from the reference in the book of Bereishit in the Torah:

“And there was evening, and there was morning, one day.”

Thus, the day begins from the evening and a full day is the evening plus the following morning and afternoon.

A New Moon, a New Month

The Hebrew month begins with the first sighting of the smallest crescent moon.

Traditionally, this was determined by Great Sanhedrin (ancient Jewish supreme court) by two Jews testifying they saw the new moon.

Nowadays, we use a calendar which is based on lunar and solar mathematical calculations since we no longer have the Great Sanhedrin.

Regular Years and Leap Years

The Hebrew calendar adds an extra month (“Adar”) seven times during every 19-year cycle.

The extra month of “Adar” comes from various references in the Torah which prescribes certain holidays to occur in specific seasons.

For example, Passover must occur in the spring and Rosh Hashanah in the fall, etc., and Yom Kippur may not occur on a Friday or Sunday.
