Give Matanot La'evyonim with Colel Chabad
For hundreds of years, Jews worldwide have fulfilled Matanot La’Evyonim through Colel Chabad, ensuring those in need can celebrate Purim. This mitzvah, one of the four of Purim, provides direct support so everyone can partake in the joy of the holiday.
Fulfilling the Mitzvah of Matanot La’Evyonim
On Purim, each person must give a gift to at least two poor individuals—money or food that can enhance their meal. While they are not required to use it for that purpose, it should be enough to contribute to their celebration. Colel Chabad ensures these funds reach those in need on Purim day itself.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Obligated to give Matanot La'evyonim?
How Much Should Be Given?
The minimum requirement is a small sum, equivalent to two prutot (a few cents) per person. However, many interpret the amount as the cost of a simple meal—such as a bagel and a drink—or even a more substantial festive meal. If you have the means, it is praiseworthy to give generously.
Can Maaser (Tithe) Money Be Used?
No. Since this is a mitzvah obligation, it should be fulfilled with personal funds. However, once you have met the minimum requirement, any extra donations can be taken from maaser money.
Who Qualifies as "Poor"?
This mitzvah is specifically for helping poor Jewish individuals. The best recipients are those who lack the means to buy food for Purim. However, those facing significant financial hardship (e.g., high medical bills with no way to pay them) may also qualify.
What is the Best Time to Give?
The mitzvah is fulfilled on Purim day, not the night before. Ideally, donations should be given after the Megillah reading. When reciting the Shehecheyanu blessing before the daytime Megillah reading, one should have this mitzvah in mind.
Can I Give in Advance?
Yes, but only if you designate a messenger or give through an organization that will distribute the funds on Purim itself, like Colel Chabad.
Can I Give on Purim to Be Distributed in Jerusalem on Shushan Purim?
Most opinions say yes—if you donate on Purim (14th of Adar) and it is received by the needy in Jerusalem on Shushan Purim (15th of Adar), you have fulfilled your obligation.
Special Note for This Year
This year, Shushan Purim falls on Shabbos, meaning that any money given for the poor in Jerusalem will only be distributed on Friday, the 14th of Adar. If you wish to fulfill your mitzvah for the poor of Jerusalem, be sure to donate in advance so that it can be distributed before Shabbos.
